The first settler to arrive in Mossman was
Dan Hart in 1875. A village was established in 1876.
Mossman was originally named Mosman, but
to avoid confusion with the Sydney suburb it was renamed to Mossman.
Mossman primary industry is sugarcane,
however is also the service town to many surrounding towns including Cooya
Beach, Julatten, Mt Molloy, Miallo, Newell Beach, Port Douglas, Wonga Beach
and places north of the Daintree River.
Mossman is the centre of the Douglas
Shire. The Douglas Shire is the only place in the World where two World
Heritage Areas meet - the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics of Far
North Queensland. Over 80% of the Shire is World Heritage listed.
